Editor’s note · Rivale
This Rivale Diff issue has three spotlight stories.
The first is about those plugins nobody touched in a year that still grew. Sounds almost counter intuitive, or at least hard to believe, yet 4,575 of the top 12,500 WordPress plugins had not released an update since September 2025, and 3,928 of them had more downloads per day in September than in August. Here are a few names Regenerate Thumbnails and Limit Login Attempts among them. More below, in their dedicated section.
The second spotlight story goes to AI, specifically the AI tag. 110 of the top 12,500 plugins carry the ai tag, and as a group they released more updates, declared support for WordPress 7.1.x more often and gained more downloads per day than the top 12,500 as a whole. Below you’ll get to see the plugin names that rose and those that fell.
The third is the month’s biggest download moves. Elementor and Yoast SEO generated the most, while Akismet recorded the biggest contraction.
The rest of the issue is the diff, as usual: who released an update, who gained ratings, who climbed into the top 1,000, who arrived, which plugins had their listing closed, and where the whole directory stands on WordPress 7.1.x support and maintenance.
Enjoy!
